I must've watched this video about 3 times before ever typing anything. I really enjoyed this performance from Shane because he talks about all the things that took place in history and how we can all make a difference just by using our 'voice'. I like how he opens up the poem with a joke to lighten the mood before getting serious. I think that Shane Koyczan is a poet that finds unique ways to make his words flow. He finds a way to rhyme words that sound good together. An example is the sentence in the beginning where he says "...too many live in countries where its bullets instead of ballads, where gavels fall like mallets...” To me this sentence really shows the condition of not just third world countries of the world but also the thoughts of people these days. Everyone is always thinking of finding ways to get themselves "higher" in the social system and in a way, that's what bullets are used for. Bullets are a means of getting someone out of the way so you can move further "up". We're not thinking of "ballads" and peace and harmony with each other. People are always thinking of themselves. A ‘voice’ is not always necessarily a sound that is heard. It can be the thoughts of a person. That’s why I feel that the message of the poem is about ones own thoughts. The line "This is my voice. There are many like it, but this one is mine" is repeated many times (showing repetition). To me this is a line that has great significance (apart from the fact that it is the title). It speaks out to me because I feel that it is true. There are many ‘voices’ in the world, but this one that I have is mine. This voice of mine can make a difference. Whether it is great or small. Like Helen Keller who found a voice, like Rosa Parks on the bus, like Nelson Mandela who always went that extra mile. I think that this is poetry. He uses literary devices and the way he says his sentences makes it feel like the lines are in short phrases. Also no matter if this was a rap or a song, those are poems as well because the speaker/author is speaking it with an idea and a purpose. But the readers/listeners are able to interpret it in many ways. Lastly all these people Shane mentioned had the idea to fight for what is right. For this reason I think Shane is trying to get the listeners to realize that we, the people of the present, should let our ‘voices’ be heard. Speak up and let everyone know that “This is my voice. There are many like it, but this is mine.”
I think this video and the poet is a great representation of the poem because "This is my voice" he is trying to say he is himself and he loves himself for being different. I like how he opened his performance with the definition of "politics" joke. I also really like the part where he screams all those allusions about historic people and says it really quickly. I think he should have moved around, I don'i like him just standing there and his hand movements were quite distracting. I think the poet is an advocat of politics (because he said "bullets instead of ballots") and that heroes do exist and also about his own voice (which I think means he likes himself for being different). This is poetry because I can hear babbling; there are a lot of rhymes and cacophony. Also a lot of other literary devices like allusions. At one point it started sounding like rap.
