My thoughts on this video was that it was not really a poem, but more of him speaking, The swearing makes it so unprofessional, and the performance was well, but again the swearing was unnecessary. I can somewhat realate to being self conscious and such things like clothes, but of course not to the degree of what he was talking about. I liked how he performed and how he made it so he was self conscious acting as if he was. What i didn't like was the poem, and how he used and slurred words to fit his poem. The messege of this poem was for people to stop being so insecure, and how some people care too much of what others think of them. To live life from your own point of view not others. I dont think it is poetry, but the structure, how it ryhmes, how it stops and starts, makes it a poem
This has to be one of my favourite pieces of poetry. I feel that I understand it more because I first heard it as a song a few years ago and I feel that that helped me understand most of what Kanye is trying to say a little better. In this piece Kanye explains the things that all humans go through because of our environment and of course media. When Kanye says, "Man I spent a hundred bucks on this, just to be like nigga you ain't up on this". He means that some people only buy expensive things to show off, boast, and make themselves seem better than another individual because they have the latest for example Armani shirt. Something that we all know that we have done in our past time.
I have to say that I agree with Harjote, just because the way Kanye presented the 'poem' didn't seem to feel or sound like a poem. Though on the other hand, I also do agree with Hanna because it's true, at least to me, that songs are essentially poems. Both a song and a poem are written, share a view on an idea or concept, and are texts that use such language that you can see the meaning behind them and not just hear or read it/them.
@Harjote: "The swearing makes it so unprofessional, and the performance was well, but again the swearing was unnecessary." Out of curiosity, how do you feel about swearing in rap? In songs? Is it still considered "unprofessional"? Or do we have a higher standard of "professionalism" for poetry? A great topic for debate.
i personally think this is one of the poems that stuck out to me more because its not really him reciting poetry but its more like him giving a speech of why we care about what others think, and how we are portrayed. Yes like Hanna had mentioned some of it was from a song, which he put in to prove hispoint. I agree with harjote about how he slurred, but this was kind of different than the others because this was more on the ball with the words, it was broad. But at the same time i like how he was swearing because it added more personality and how he felt about "self conscious", yes it may have been unprofessional, but it was used in a way to deliver his thoughts and point of view. lastly the message he tried to deliver was that we as people have to stop looking at ourselves through the eyes of others but through the eyes of our own.
HARVEY: It is a poem because it has all the makings of a poem but then again aren't all songs poems in a way. I think the swearing is professional because it's adding to his msg and making it stonger he didn't just add the swearing because he felt like it. I am with harjot on the clothes i can relate to that but the other things not really. I do like the song better then the way he performed it in the video
Josie & Ekam: We enjoyed watching these performances because they were powerful and the performers did a good job on making it emotional. we believe these performances were a form of poetry because there was a rhythm and it flowed, there was also a meaning behind it. we think that the swearing wasn't unprofessional because he was just expressing himself. If he swears in his music and its okay then why is it unprofessional just because hes speaking instead of rapping. It sounded like a poem, it looked like a poem if you read the lyrics and it behaved like a poem. It has all the characteristics of a poem.
harvey i think it's a good poem it can have a good meaning if your in those kinda things in life. The poet kayne west is a good i like his music. The thing that stands out to me the most is his emotion in the performace. I really can only connetict to one of the things and that is the colthes part of the performace. The thing i didn't like about the poem was it didn't make me like about any deeper meaning behide it.It just was like all other rap songs. The message of this poem i think has something to do with whatever you do it's your only doing it it fit in like going to school but you don't even konw what your going to do with your life isn't that just waste of money. This is babble because you cant really see what he is talking about cause the things he says you have to picture them in your head.

ReplyDelete@Hanna: Do you prefer this version or the song?
