This poem showed me a new perspective to look at life with. What I mean by this is simply that I never really thought of connecting life with fairy tales. Since I was raised with religion my whole life; I always thought of life in the context of what Islam teaches. Though I am not saying I never "pretended" or as a little kid imagined being and living in a fairy tale. I am just stating that I would have never made the connection of the two (life & fairy tales) now or in the future. But To my knowledge, I think every kid did make this connection; especially with all the movies, and cartoons that help little kids imagine/pretend. Only by the third time I listened to this did I acknowledge the rhymes, Jamie's tone, and all the things that make this a poem. That’s because I was listening to the words rather then really noticing what makes it a poem.
We’re all growing up to become adults right now and what was substantial about this performance to me was that Kennedy used fairytales as a theme to portray his poem’s meanings. He brought the audience back to their childhood memories of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and much more to exemplify his message. Using the theme, he incorporated into the poem how significant he felt his daughter was to him and how imagination should never be stored away, even after we’ve grown up. There were many things that made this qualify to be poetry. He used allusions to numerous fairy tales. He also uses many characteristics of a poem that fit under “doodle” and “babble”. Such as anaphora: “Because she makes me, make believe” and “Life is a grim fairy tale” and metaphors: “You’re my ivory key to the secret garden”. The poem also has a steady rhythm to it and a bonus to me, was that it also rhymed. Something I also really liked was how his actions during his performance matched up with the words of the poem. Because this was a performance, there was no context for me to read along while I listened. It made it difficult to understand but repeatedly watching the video was like rereading a poem. Each time something new would grab my attention and a different meaning could be deciphered from it. I thought that his poem and his performance was incredibly powerful and was able to get his messages across clearly. The reason why this poem is so effective was because the fairytale theme is something each and every one of us can relate to. At least once in our lifetime, we have heard of a story with a moral just like this poem has. A question that I have is why he wrote this poem and why he wrote it in such a “grim” mood. He said, “I make believe that I can be here…forever…that parents can stay together” and “A kiss will wake up any princess, when her mother is a sleeping beauty that I will never wake up next to again.” These two lines stood out to me because I think these are the reasons why he created this piece. My assumption is that perhaps his wife left him or passed away and his daughter’s power to “make [him] make believe” is the one thing that keeps him from breaking down. Even though the poem has a hint of bleakness to it, in the beginning, there was humour, “I tell my daughter if a boy whose never gonna be a man, named Peter Pan ever comes to your window sill, and knocks and asks for your hand to fly to Neverland, go. You don’t even have to leave a note, just float, away because tomorrow land will never be better than today.” I liked how he used this to begin his poem because it caught my attention. Once he caught my attention, it was easy for him to get the poem’s intention across: “But she makes me to never let reality tell you what imagination is worth”.
I think what the poet is trying to say is that when you are a child, you listen to different fairytales and believe that anything in life is possible and that in life only good things happen but as we grow older, we realize that it isn't true and our beliefs start to change. Even then, though life may seem like a grim fairytale, we should never stop dreaming and never let reality tell us what to and what not imagine. The poets's overall performance was good I liked how he expressed his feelings and thoughts through his words as well as body language. The message of the poem is that even though we face reality through a lot of hardships and difficulties and realize that everything isn't like a fairytale, we should continue dreaming and never fear to imagine beyond the possibilities because of reality. I think this is a poem because it has rhyme, repitition, expresses thoughts and feelings, has a deep meaning to it and has a flow.
When I first watched this video, it didn't really make sense, but after I watched it a couple of times, I understood what he was talking about and what he meant. This has become one of my favorite poem, because it has a powerful meaning behind it, which relates to us, and it leaves you hanging with a deep thought. The way the poet, Jamie Kennedy explains his feelings they show how he tries to hide the real perspective of the world, from his daughter, and is willing to make everything up just to see a smile on her face. From his point of view, he knows that everything isn't perfect as it seems like, there is a lot of ups and downs you have to face in life, there is a lot of broken roads, and rough path you have to go through. When he came on stage, his expression showed a lot of depth, he had a neutral face, which help give a powerful beginning, and that caught my attention. His expression, and behavior right through the whole performance had a great impact on what the message he was trying to convey to everyone. I liked how his hand gestures symbolized each of the fairy tale, and it gave more of a meaning to what he was trying to explain. My thoughts on this poem was that it was really captivating, and it magnetized you to the meaning of the poem. The message of the poem was that, when we were young, our parents read to us fairy tales, such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White...etc. They created a image in our minds that life is like a fairy tale, everything is perfect, such as one day you will meet your handsome Prince charming, a perfect love story, which won't have a tragic end, beautiful house on the hill, and a problem free life where villains have no place in your happy, colorful life. But as we grew up, we realized that life is nothing the way we had read in books, all happy-go-lucky. Villains do exist, problems stay, some love stories have tragic end, you keep waiting, but your Prince charming may never come, or that beautiful house on the hill side isn't there. That image we had in our minds shatters, in a moment. As Jamie said “And every mirror you are going to see, is a looking glass so hold on to your fantasies like a photo clutch on to it ring, because the never ending story, will end someday, and she makes me make believe...” I am not saying that you shouldn't read fairy tales, or stop dreaming, but one day you have to wake up, and see the reality/dark side of the world. One line that I really like was “...A grim fairy tale, but she makes me make believe to never let reality tell you, what your imagination is worth”. This line stood out to me because no matter how much you imagine, you shouldn't let one little thing destroy it, it's a precious dream, it's a memory that is long lasting. I think this is a poem because he used repetition to elaborate his thoughts and show us the difference between fairy tales and the reality of the world, and every line he said had a rhyme to it.

"Grim" is a pun on the Grimm brothers -- the 2 guys who rewrote/revised many of the fairytales we know today! I love clever puns.
